What makes the Music Explorer's Lab (MEL) Unique?

  • The Teacher – with 25+ years of experience, I have had the privilege of working with students of a wide age range, as well as various backgrounds, experience, culture and interests.  This necessitates a flexible program that at the same time fulfills the standard goals of Music Education.   At the MEL, we regularly review student goals and adjust their track accordingly, balancing them with their current repertoire.

  • Our Values – At the MEL, we value each of our students as the individuals they are.  We also value the needs of their families and work to be as accommodating as possible.  Our students and families are our most valuable asset, and we constantly strive to treat them as such.

  • Our Name – We are not a Music Studio.  We are not a Music Classroom.  We are a Music Laboratory where we teach the fundamentals of music not simply by rote, but through the exploration of the sound and feel of the music and how it works.

  • Our History – The MEL was born out of 35+ years of quality Music Education in the quality setting of Music Makers Piano Lab.  Music Makers was under the quality direction of owner Kay Latham for 30 years.  Ms. Latham always encouraged excellence, confidence, mutual respect, and the very best that individuals could present without the pressure of perfection and competition.  Her philosophy is that Making Music should be fun for everyone and thus inspired a love of music and playing piano for her many, many students.  The MEL continues this tradition and builds on the rich foundation provided by Ms. Latham and Music Makers Piano Lab.

  • Our Program –The MEL is a program designed to spark creativity, inspire curiosity, encourage confidence and develop a lifelong love of music through the exploration of music and how it works.  We also study the origins of certain music and how it fits into particular cultures.  It is a comprehensive program that seeks not only to teach a new and wonderful skill, but also to cause one to want to learn about and experience more and more of the world of music.
